Zachary Kistka, MD, is an endocrinologist with Family Medicine of South Bend. Dr. Kistka has been in the Michiana area for 3 years. He likes being in a mid-sized town with Midwest values. Dr. Kistka grew up in Chelsea, IL. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the young age of 8. He was hospitalized in Ann Arbor, MI where he was cared for and educated by an excellent medical student. This inspired Dr. Kistka to become a doctor. He wanted to be like his mentor.
Dr. Kistka attended medical school at Wayne State University followed by a residency at University Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. He completed his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. While in Nashville, Dr. Kistka met and married his wife.
Dr. Kistka’s wife, Heather, is a neurosurgeon with Beacon Medical Group. They have two children. Dr. Kistka loves baseball, hockey, craft beer and grilling out his favorite foods. He also enjoys riding his bike which has special spots for both children to ride along too. He also attends events to help raise money for A Rosie Place which is one of his favorite charities.
Dr. Kistka’s coworkers would describe him as Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Everything has a place and every place has a thing. One thing that can be said is that Dr. Kistka is passionate about endocrine disease. It’s hard to get him to stop talking about it once he starts. He loves being able to educate patients about their disease in a way they can comprehend. He finds that he can connect on a different level with them having both DM1 and hypothyroidism himself. He really loves when he can tell patients that they finally have a diagnosis and start them on the appropriate treatment plan. He has had memorable cases such as helping a 47 year old man through puberty or finding and treating several cases of subclinical Cushing’s Syndrome. These have been high points in his career. We hope that Dr. Kistka continues to have high points throughout the rest of his career. Thank you Dr. Kistka for all you do.
