Dr. James Porile, MD, is a partner of Nephrology Physicians, LLC, a multi- physician group dedicated to the care of patients with kidney disease. Dr. Porile has been with the group since 1993 and is currently the senior partner. The Nephrology Physicians, LLC group have office locations throughout the Michiana area and offer dialysis in each of their locations. In addition to his work as a nephrologist, Dr. Porile is part of the SJHS medical staff leadership team where he serves as a Secretary Treasurer.
Dr. Porile knew he wanted to be a doctor after volunteering at a medical center during his early college years at Duke University. He attended medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and then went on, at the university, to complete his residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in the specialty of Nephrology. As a physician, Dr. Porile greatly enjoys the relationships he is able to build with his patients and their families. He also enjoys the intellectual challenge of his specialty. While he does practice all areas of nephrology, he has particular interests in home dialysis, transplant, hemodialysis, chronic kidney disease, medical management of kidney stones and glomerular disease. His funniest medical story comes from when he first moved to the area. It was his first night on call, and he took the transfer of a very sick patient from a different hospital. When he came in to see the patient, the Intensive Care Unit’s nurse thought that he was a medical student and wondered aloud when the doctor would be arriving. He thought “Wow, I’ve really made it!”, and went on to explain that he was the doctor!
Dr. Porile grew up southwest of here, in West Lafayette, Indiana. Growing up, he attended many Purdue games, and as his father was on the faculty there, and was a devoted Boilermaker. Dr. Porile attended Duke University for his undergraduate studies where he was just as devoted to the Duke teams. However, since moving to South Bend, he has become a Notre Dame fan, happily rooting for the Fighting Irish, unless, of course, they are playing Purdue or Duke. Dr. Porile has been married for 29 years and has two daughters. His eldest daughter recently graduated from Duke University, and his youngest is attending Duke now.
In his free time, Dr. Porile enjoys travel, personal fitness, reading, spending time with family, and helping to support our community’s local food pantries.
